TED Talk: Aicha el-Wafi + Phyllis Rodriguez:
The mothers who found forgiveness, friendship |
Reflection on the mothers who found forgiveness, friendshipThrough this talk the audience witnesses the incredible love of two mothers towards their sons. The presentation demonstrates a remarkable bond between the two women. Through sharing each other's lives, particularly the depths of our pain, allows us a true connection with our own lives. Change can only take place by recognizing each other as one, we need mindfulness of knowing the other as ourselves, and that hatred only fuels more hate. The mother who speaks out to children regarding the neglect of young girls and what they no longer need to follow to within the limitations of their religion, is doing a great service. Sharing stories like this gives drive to change and most important replaces the embedded fear that we have been taught to hold onto. This talk is a beautiful reminder of the good things in civilization, forgiveness, friendship, overcoming loss hardship, and heartbreak. A moving moment in the presentation was when Aicha el-Wafi apologized even if she never knew the fact that if her son was guilty or not. This statement allows the audience to reflect on society views that we tend to point the blame even if we never seek to know what the reason behind the wrongs. In comparison to the novel, The Great Gatsby, Nick is there for Gatsby till the very end. Even after his death, Nick plans his funeral and all the arrangements. Though Nick is aware that Tom is to blame for Gatsby’s death he never lashes out towards him when he runs into towards the end of the novel. In comparison I think Nick sees through the persona of Tom and Daisy to the point of forgiveness.
